Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race

Join our crew! The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race is the most prestigous schooner race in America. As many as 50 ships participate every year. This year the schooner Summer Wind will compete as the sole representative for Philadelphia. You're invited to join us as an active member of our crew for the entire week. This is not for wimps! There are no easy accomodations during this trip. It's the real deal! You'll serve on watches, handle lines and follow orders. We'll teach you what you need to know. You'll learn how to tie knots and set and douse sails. You'll sleep in a crew bunk with your sleeping bag, like everyone else. By the end, you'll be tired, hungry and worn out, but you'll love every minute of it!

We'll depart from Philadelphia in the early evening of Tuesday, October 9th, heading to Baltimore through the night. Wednesday includes a Captains Meeting, the Parade of Sail in Baltimore's Inner Harbor with all of the ships on display for the public and a crew-only party Wednesday night. Thursday is the beginning of the race at the Bay Bridge starting line. We'll sail throughout the night and reach the finish line at the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay sometime the next day. On Friday all of the ships arrive in Portsmouth, VA for 2 days of festivities. We'll depart Portsmouth on Sunday morning and sail all the way back to Philadelphia, arriving sometime Monday night, October 15th. It's an adventure you'll never forget!
